A set of 6 or 12 super rare original vintage Mid-century era hair bobby pins in the extra long, heavy-duty 2-3/4" long size. The pins are high-quality, sturdy enameled metal with a classic straight shape. They are super strength with a smooth finish and rubber / ball tipped ends that will not scratch the scalp. I have these fabulous hair pins available in black or bronze color. They were designed to hold in place the super fashionable curled bob and bouffant hair styles of the era. These beautiful pins are perfect for holding heavy updos, not to mention they have a history of use as "roller pins" and "finger wave setters" (***see below). The perfect pins for holding chignon buns, French rolls, and other special updos. Wonderful for both everyday and special occasions.
***Surprisingly these extra-long, heavy hair pins are not only great for holding updos, but wonderful hair styling accessories! They were known as "wave setters" in the Edwardian and Art Deco eras where they would have been used create the quintessential "finger wave" hair styles such as "marcel waves". They would be placed in wet or damp hair, then worn until the hair dried (often overnight), in order to create fashionable waves without damaging heat. They were known by other various names such as "finger wavers", "hair wavers", and "water wavers". By the Mid-Century era curls had become more popular than waves. These pins were at that time known as "bob pins" and "roller pins". Their use varied from holding up pretty curled bob & bouffant hair styles, to creating wet-set "pin curls", and securing plastic hair rollers (curlers) while the hair dried.
-Age: Midcentury (1960's based on packaging style)
-Material(s): Black or bronze enameled metal
-Size: 2-3/4" long
-Brand / Hallmarks: Black are Scoldy-Lox brand, made in the USA. Bronze are Diane brand, made in Japan.
-Condition: Black are on original card and appear to be unused NOS (new old stock) so are in like-new condition. The bronze are inside the original box that shows signs of use. The bronze finish appears slightly uneven along the length of the pins, which may be from wear over time or may be an artifact of how the finish was applied...either way they are still strong and hold well and the finish along the length will not be seen when worn.
